“At NUPI, we will examine how artificial intelligence reshapes power dynamics in society – from how democracies respond to disinformation, to how states and corporations position themselves in an emerging AI-driven geopolitical landscape,” says Niels Nagelhus Schia, head of NUPI’s Research Group on Security and Defence and director of its Centre for Research on New Technology.

NUPI’s research will focus on how to understand and respond to the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence – in democratic institutions, in organisations, and in the global contest for control over technology and digital public goods.

A Strong Team Effort

“While NUPI is joining TRUST as a junior partner, this collaboration offers an important opportunity to build expertise through engagement with top national and international researchers. It also provides a strong platform for launching new research projects and funding proposals,” says Halvard Leira, NUPI’s Research Director.

The application process  was an intense and collaborative effort, involving contributions from across NUPI.

“About a year ago, we quickly drafted a NUPI proposal to qualify. Over the autumn, we held regular coordination meetings, refined the research themes and texts, and negotiated roles and funding – all the way until the application was submitted in January. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed along the way – this was a fantastic team effort,” says Leira.

Bringing Together Norway’s Leading Research Communities

The TRUST centre will be led by the University of Oslo (UiO), SINTEF, and the Norwegian Computing Center, and will be hosted by dScience – the Centre for Computational and Data Science at UiO’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

“Led by Professor Arnoldo Frigessi at UiO, the centre brings together Norway’s strongest research communities – including UiO, SINTEF, and the Norwegian Computing Center – along with key public sector agencies in tax, health, transport, and justice, several municipalities, and major private sector actors such as Equinor, Kongsberg Maritime, Norsk Hydro, DNV, and leading banks and insurance firms. Together, we aim to develop new knowledge on how AI can be made more accurate, transparent, and fair – and how it can be deployed responsibly and inclusively in critical areas of society,” explains Schia.
