The international system is in crisis. Economic growth has been slow, debt levels are at historically high levels and the levels of inequality have grown across the world. At the same time, the state system has been destabilised. One the one hand, democratic governments are experiencing a crisis of legitimacy. On the other hand, the US led international order is challenged by the weakening of US influence and the emergence of China as a great power. What are the causes and implications of these developments?

In this seminar, Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Max Planck Institute in Cologne, Wolfgang Streeck, will discuss some of these issues, in conversation with Research Professor at NUPI Stein Sundstøl Eriksen.

Wolfgang Streeck is a world-leading sociologist and political economist, and one of the major theorists writing about the current crisis. Among his latest books are Buying Time: The Delayed Crisis of Democratic Capitalism and How Will Capitalism End? Essays on a Failing System.

Stein Sundstøl Eriksen is a Research Professor at NUPI. One of his latest projects was eleven analyses of Norway’s partner countries on aid and development.
