Norway-China Symposium for Research within the Social Sciences, Humanities and Law (NOKINSYMP)

2018 - 2023 (Ongoing)
Annual symposium that highlights the importance of the social disciplines in Norway-China research cooperation.

The symposiums are arranged as round tables for invited researchers from leading Norwegian and Chinese institutions within the social sciences, humanities and law. NUPI coordinates the Norwegian participation. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is the responsible on the Chinese side. The activities alternate between China and Norway, and in addition to the scholarly symposiums, we arrange other open activities that may contribute to highlighting opportunities and challenges related to academic cooperation between Norway and China.

The first symposium was arranged in connection to the Norwegian state visit to China in fall 2018 in Beijing, with «Welfare in Local and International Dimensions» as the overall theme. CASS National Institute of Social Development (NISD) was then the main host.

In 2019, «International Economic Governance» was chosen as the main theme for the symposium held in Oslo. NUPI was the host and CASS Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) coordinated the Chinese participation.

In 2020, plans for a new symposium in China was put on hold, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we have kept the initiative warm and met digitally to discuss further plans. In June 2021, NUPI and IWEP arranged a digital mini version of the symposium, with Europe-China relations as the overall theme.

The main symposium activity is research-focused round tables with a limited number of participants. From Norway, OsloMet, UiB, BI, Nord University, Institute for Social Research, NTNU, FNI, NIFU, fafo, UiO and NUPI have so far participated.

NUPI’s work with the project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.

We hear a lot about the slowing of China’s economic growth and the trade war with USA. How do Chinese researchers view the situation and what does it mean for other countries and Norway?
