The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and ILOS, University of Oslo, have the pleasure of inviting you to the opening seminar of the new seminar series ‘New Russian Nationalism’. This first seminar will focus on

Russian national identity: a work in progress
The Russian state has regained much of its strength under President Vladimir Putin, but its national identity remains curiously ill-defined. It has very uneasy relations with neighbouring states, while at home it faces the challenge of a large immigrant community. Why has Russia failed to evolve into a ‘normal’ nation-state? What are likely scenarios for the future course of Russian nationalism?

The presentation will be given by Professor Peter Rutland, Wesleyan University.

The new seminar series, which will include quarterly presentations on various aspects of Russian nationalism, is part of the new research project ‘Nation-building, nationalism and the new “other” in today’s Russia’, a joint project between University of Oslo and NUPI funded by the Research Council of Norway under the NORRUSS programme.
