The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, NUPI, has the pleasure of inviting you to the seminar:

"Maritime Security in East Asia"

with Professor Geoff Till from the Defence Studies Department at King’s College London and Dr. Sam Bateman from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources & Security at the University of Wollongong.

Maritime Security in East Asia is not only a regional challenge. International trade between Asia and other parts of the world depends on uninterrupted access to maritime shipping routes in East Asia. Even Norway’s economy may be influenced by an interruption of the international flow of goods or a local conflict between some of the globally economic significant states in East Asia.

Some of challenges in the East Asian region are overlapping maritime claims in international waters and different views on international governance and maritime legal affairs. Geoff Till’s lecture will cover the strategic and operational scene, including regional naval developments. Sam Bateman will address legal and political issues, including the access to the global commons, the UNCLOS debates and good order at sea initiatives.

Geoff Till
is formerly the Dean of Academic Studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, and he is now Professor of Maritime Studies in the DSD and Director of the Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies. Before that he was Professor of History at The Royal Naval College Greenwich. He has taught at the Department of War Studies, King's College London, where he completed his MA and PhD. Since 2009 Prof. Since 2009 Geoff Till has been a Visiting Professor at the Maritime Security Programme of the RSIS in Singapore. His works have been translated into nine languages, and he regularly speaks at staff colleges and academic conferences around the world. His most recent publications include 
Asia’s Naval Expansion: An Arms Race in the Making?
 and Seapower, a Guide for the Twenty-First Century.

Dr Sam Bateman
 retired from the Royal Australian Navy as a Commodore and is now a Professorial Research Fellow at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong in Australia, and an Adviser to the Maritime Security Programme at RSIS in Singapore. His naval service included four ship commands ranging from a patrol boat to guided-missile destroyer. He has written extensively on defence and maritime issues in Australia, the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean, and was awarded his PhD from the University of NSW in 2001 for a dissertation on “The Strategic and Political Aspects of the Law of the Sea in East Asian Seas”. He is a nominated member of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Expert and Eminent Persons’ Group.
