The International Panel on Arctic Environmental Responsibility

The International Panel on Arctic Environmental Responsibility is an independent and free-standing body tasked with assessing the environmental status of oil, gas, and mining companies in the Arctic.

The panel covers companies that are involved in resource extraction above the Arctic Circle in the circumpolar north. The purpose of panel is to promote higher environmental standards among companies involved in resource extraction in the Arctic.

The International Panel on Arctic Environmental Responsibility covers the Arctic areas of the following countries:

  • Canada
  • Denmark (Greenland)
  • Iceland
  • Finland
  • Norway
  • Russia
  • Sweden
  • USA (Alaska)

Membership

Nomination to the panel is the prerogative of the panel’s Advisory Board. The Board nominates candidates based on their expertise on Arctic, environmental and resource-extraction issues and seeks to include a broad variety of panel members in terms of geographical background, expertise, age, and gender. It is also possible to apply for membership of the panel. To express your interest in submitting an application, send your CV to Indra Øverland (ino@nupi.no).

Panel members are required to act impartially and disclose any conflicts of interest in their contributions to the panel.

The panel is financed by the project Science and Business in Arctic Environmental Governance (PolGov), which is implemented by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs in cooperation with the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and international partner institutions, funded by the Polar Research programme (POLARPROG) of the Research Council of Norway, the Ministry of Education and Research of Norway and the Ministry of Climate and Environment. However, the panel acts independently of these institutions and neither speaks on behalf of nor answers to them.
